Sounds

Korg have equipped the M50 with exacting samples of a great range of instruments, packing in over 600 individual sound programs with 256MB of sample data, synth sounds have fantastic character and acoustic instruments have amazing realism and authenticity. And the best part is all the sounds can be adjusted and stretched to fit in with your mix, Tone Adjust lets you play around with the main characteristics of each sound in a simple manner, all of which can be used in Program, Combi and Sequencer modes.

Keyboard Sizes

The M50 brings to the market a new keybed from Korg, the semi-weighted Natural Touch keyboard which comes in two sizes, the 61 & 73-key version, this new keybed is the synthesis of all of Korg’s experience in helping you deliver your most expressive and dynamic performance.

Then for the piano purist there is the 88-key RH3 Graded Hammer Action which is Korg’s top-of-the-line for those who are looking for a realistically satisfying playing experience. And somehow Korg have managed to shoe-horn this keyboard into a 46 pound workstation for those who need portability.

The Arpeggiator

No workstation would be complete without a solid and competent arpeggiator, the M50 comes equipped with dual polyphonic arpeggiators which can both be run simultaneously in Sequencer and Combi mode and can be used to control and adjust velocity and timbre.

Putting It All Together

The M50 can just run individual programs or you can take advantage of the Combi feature, where you can put together up to 16 sound programs, easily control them from the keyboard or set to individual MIDI channels. And as with most elements of the M50 all the preloaded sounds can be stretched and adjusted in any manner you wish and they can all the stored once you found the right combination, there is onboard memory to save 512 Combinations and 640 Programs.

Enhanced Definition Synthesis

The M50 comes with the same powerful hardware engine that the M3 is equipped with, Korg’s Enhanced Definition Synthesis (EDS). The EDS brings with it some amazing technology that draws on a multitude of filter and oscillators etc. to allow you to adjust just about every nature of each sound.

With the EDS each voice can take advantage of:

  • four filters
  • five Low Frequency Oscillators (LFO)
  • two stereo oscillators (each stereo oscillator is capable of four-way velocity cross fading, switching, or layering.
  • five time-variant Envelope Generators (EG)
  • two amp sections

And if multi-samples is what you are after then all of the above means a single voice can use up to eight stereo multi-samples.

Then if filters are you thing, each voice also has access to up to four multi-mode (High Pass, Band Pass, Band Reject, Low-pass) filters; two filters per oscillator running side by side, stacked or in series – as well as a 24dB mode.

Korg Pa588 Workstation Keyboard

Get your Korg Pa588 from GuitarCenter.com today.

The Korg Pa588workstation keyboard comes from Korg’s PA family of workstations and marries together many of the elements of the PA family that make it a mainstay of the workstation market with their renowned 88-key top-of-the-line RH3 graded hammer piano keyboard, so that you can get both the most realistic sound and feel from this comprehensive workstation.
Korg Pa588 Digital Piano and Arranger Keyboard Standard

Features

  • Keys: 88 RH3 Real Weighted Hammer Action
  • Sounds: Over 882 total; 334 Styles
  • Effects: 4 Stereo Processors
  • Pedals: Damper (also includes collapsible stand)
  • Speakers: 10 cm Full range (x 2); Tweeter (x 2)
  • Amplification: 15 Watts per channel; Stereo

Korg have equipped the Pa588 workstation with an amazingly capable four-layer stereo piano sound engine, so that you can bring the most dazzling piano sounds to your performance, it even comes with a dedicated ‘Play Piano’ button giving you instant access to a world-class digital piano! As for the workstation side of things the Pa588 comes with the traditional 16 track sequencer, but never to be one who is just traditional, Korg have added their unique backing sequencer to the package. The backing sequencer works by identifying your cords and recording each Style instrument onto a separate track and MIDI sequence.

Speaking of Styles, the Pa588 has a powerful style engine which allows you to mix together bass, drums and other instrumental parts. There are over 330 different Styles contained within the Pa588 which are backed by the Pa Style engine which keeps all the different Styles in tune with your performance. The Style programming allows you to take advantage of up to eight parts, four variations, three intros/count-in, three Fills/break and three endings, thus each Style gives you every element you need for playing a song.

The RH3 keyboard comes into its own when partnered with Korg’s Real eXperience (RX) Technology as every aspect of the nature in which you hit or strike the keys is sensed and translated into fantastically realist piano sounds. And the power of the RH3 keyboard is not limited to just the piano sounds, Korg have brought to bear every capability of the keyboard on all the sounds, for example, a single guitar sound may play a harmonic, a mute note, a soft note, a loud note, a pull-off, all determined by simply how hard you strike the key.

All of this is powered by the 16 oscillators within the Pa588 which control every note in each sound, if this sounds familiar this is because the Pa588 comes with the same EDS (Extended Definition Synthesis) that is on the Korg M3 keyboard.

The Pa588 is equipped with premium speakers which are housed within a bass-reflex enclosure within the keyboard for full stereo sound. This allows you to take the Pa588 with you to a jam session or gig with everything you need in the one portably sized unit.

PHA III Ivory Feel Keyboard

The PHA III Ivory Feel Keyboard is all about delivering the best response, both to you in the feel of the keys and in translating how you press the keys into the nature of the sound that would be produced were you playing a real grand or acoustic piano.

That genuine grand-piano feel is provided by the Escapement mechanism within the keyboard which accurately recreates that ‘click’ feel, to provide you the necessary physical feedback that brings out full expression of the music, especially when playing pianissimo.

As for translating your input into the most accurate sound this is made possible by way of the PHA keyboard, which now in its third generation focuses on getting the most out of your input thanks to its improved key repetition which allows it to convey all the subtleties of your performance by registering both dynamic and velocity based tonal changes.

And the practicalities of playing have not been forgotten in this quest for musical reproduction perfection, as Roland’s Ivory Feel is a special material that is designed to prevent your fingers slipping from perspiration as it is actually a moisture-absorbent material.

SuperNATURAL Piano Sound Engine

Acoustic Pianos

Whether you need the sound of the electric piano or a stately grand-piano the RD-700NX can oblige thanks to its SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine. Acoustic pianos are a strong suite of the SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine as a number of elements that embellish the accuracy of the recreated sound are a focus of the SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine allowing it to deliver a superior sound. The particular elements that have been focused upon are:

  • Velocity Response
  • Note Decay, and
  • Key Range Behavior

By focusing on improving the capability of the Sound Engine to more accurately simulate these three elements Roland have been able to provide a level of realism that was simply impossible with older technologies. The particular aspects of each of these three elements which have been improved are, removal of the coarse “stair-step” gaps in velocity and key range, and unnatural looping in note decay. With the SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine the Roland RD-700NX is able to deliver a perfectly smooth and natural sound and response.

Electric Pianos

With all this attention being paid to perfectly recreating the acoustic piano, electric pianos have not been forgotten, not only does the RD-700NX have an amazing range of included vintage electric piano models, from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, the SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine allows you to create a myriad of original electric piano sounds by giving you unprecedented access to a range of settings that control the sound of the electric piano models. There are is whole world of adjustments you can make to the sounds of each model, including broad strokes like exchanging components of the sound generating system itself, right down to small adjustments like changing the position of the virtual pickups.

Synth Sounds

The abilities of the RD-700NX don’t end with acoustic or electric pianos, if the mood strikes you to spice up your performance there is a multitude of included sounds you can use to embellish the audience experience. The 700NX covers just about every style of sound you are likely to need, including:

  • 5 rhythm sets
  • 10 Tone Wheel organs
  • 9 GM2 rhythm sets
  • 256 GM2 tones, and
  • 242 tones

And finding just the right sound is a breeze with the intuitive user interface being displayed on a very clear high-resolution LCD screen.

Fantastic Usability

Using the RD-700NX and finding the piano sound you need is also a breeze with Roland’s popular One Touch Piano feature. This feature was a great success on previous RD model keyboards and is continued on the 700NX providing you with instant access to standard piano setups and sounds with just the touch of a button.

Superior Sound Projection

Now you can relax and just play, safe in the knowledge that your performance will achieve the necessary presence onstage and you won’t have to sacrifice of the sound quality or dynamism of your performance. This is thanks to Roland’s SuperNATURAL phase-correction technology. This comprehensive phase-correction technology allows you to penetrate through walls of sound without compressing or coloring the tone or get lost in the mix.

Comprehensive Sound Engine

The Sound Engine in the Motif XF has got synth sounds covered from vintage to modern, with 18 different filter types, unique Wave Cycle feature, 6-stage envelopes that control pitch, filter and amplitude, and Control Sets for assignable modulation.

The tone generator that makes everything work uses the very latest technology to make an 8-element-per-voice structure possible with the basics of the generator being inherited from the world renowned XS. The 8-element structure allows you to create amazingly accurate acoustic instruments along with their natural expressive articulations with help from Yamaha’s XA (Expanded Articulation).

To give you some idea of the power of the system, you can re-create guitar slides and harmonics, key release noises of many instruments including pianos, string instrument articulations such as tremolo, pizzicato, spicato etc., and the natural legato of wind instruments. And to make all these articulations easy to work with and manage there are dedicated AF1 & AF2 buttons.

If you need to recreate sophisticated piano pedaling techniques then the XF can oblige with the addition of the FC3 foot pedal which works with the tone generator and supports half damper pedaling.

Superior quality keyboards

The Motif XF range, XF6 XF7 XF8, has a number of keyboards to suite various users, the XF6 has 61 keys while the XF7 has 76 keys and both feature an FSX keyboard while the XF8 has an 88 key Balanced Hammer keyboard.

The FSX keyboard featured on the XF6 & XF7, is all about playing comfort and responsiveness with a smooth touch which is all provided by a newly developed mechanism, Yamaha have also put a lot of work into making the FSX keyboard quiet to play.

The goal of the Balanced Hammer keyboard on the XF8 is twofold; it is perfectly suited to performing a multitude of synth sounds, while giving you the impression of playing a grand piano. If anyone has the knowhow of what it takes to create that genuine grand piano feel it would have to be Yamaha and with their experience gained the XS along with the knowledge of what is needed in the synth world, a satisfying middle ground has been found.

VCM effects

Yamaha have found a way to model just about every nuance of vintage stomp boxes, compressors and EQ’s right down the texture of these devices and included it in the XF workstation by way of their proprietary Virtual Circuitry Modeling (VCM). How it does this is by modeling every aspect of the vintage device right down to the component level, such as resistors and transistors, to provided a new level of accuracy and warmth.

The VCM has other handy features such as the award winning “REV-X” reverb, taken from the SPX2000, and vocoder effects. These vocoder effects allow you to create harmonies by applying effects to your own voice, sampled by connecting a mic to the Motif’s A/D input.

741MB of Voices

The collection of Voices on the Motif XF is comprehensive, to say the least and covers all the Voices you would expect, such as wind instruments, guitars, basses, strings, orchestral sounds, EPs, vintage and modern synths, drums, and of course pianos. Two Piano Voices that have been included and are worth mentioning are two Yamaha grands, the 9’ CFIII and the 7’ S6. Every little nuance and performance enhancing detail has been included so that the Motif XF can recreate either of these two “institutions” with a fantastic level of reality.

7000 pattern strong arpeggiator

When it came time to build the arpeggiator in the XF Yamaha took the extensive library of arps from the XS and took it to the next level, adding a number of new percussion, synthesizer, drum and ending arpeggios in the order of 1,200 to arrive at a total 7,881 types of arpeggios that are offered on the Motif XF. In addition to all the standard arpeggio patterns you would expect to find on a workstation of this caliber, the XF has a number of useful extra features, such as:

  • Synth parameters can be modulated in time MIDI clock, including filtering and panning
  • By combining keyboard MegaVoices and arpeggios the unit can simulate acoustic instrument performances

128MB internal SD-RAM provides more room for sampling

No need to purchase extra memory, with the 128MB internal SD-RAM you can do all the sampling you need to get just the right mix. The sampling feature allows you to add guitars, vocals and other acoustic instruments, load sample Voice libraries and import WAV files to your Motif sequences.

Sampling vocals is easy, just connect your mic to the A/D input on the XF and sample away, the Motif also allows you to easily manage samples once you’ve got what you want by matching the recorded audio perfectly to any changes you make to the tempo of a pattern or song. And if you want to process the recordings in minute detail that is easy as well with a redesigned sample editing user interface.

Flash memory can be upgraded to a total of 2GB

If you want to up-spec your XF so it can store your own samples or add some of the new Motif Voice libraries then Yamaha can oblige with a number of upgrade options. The XF has two memory upgrade slots and the memory modules come in two sizes, 512MB and 1GB. So there are a number of combinations available to suite you needs:

  • 512MB
  • 1GB
  • 1 ½ GB
  • 2GB

And if you add all the memory together on the XF, RAM, internal and Flash, the XF can be upgraded to a total of 3GB, giving you the option to take just about every sound you might need on the road. Plus if you want some inspiration there is a whole other world on offer with XF specific third-party Voice and sample libraries.

Instantly express your ideas with Performance mode

The Motif XF brings you the power to instantly express your ideas with Performance mode, which enables you to layer up to 4 Voices, and to make everything easy to manage, split the keyboard into 4 sections with different velocity and key range windows. The real power of the unit comes into play when you add the arpeggiator to the different voices, as the XF allows you to run four different arps at the same time and easily mix things up by allowing you to switch in real time between five different variations of arpeggio patterns. And if that is not enough the workstation also features Chordal Intelligence where many of the arps will create different phrases depending on the chords that are being played on the keyboard.

Total precision of your mix is afforded as you can record performances in real time to patterns and songs for further editing and refining.

Cubase AI from Steinberg

The Motif XF comes with a special Yamaha version of Cubase, the world-renowned DAW software. Cubase AI has the same engine as Cubase 5 but has been modified to integrate more efficiently with the Motif.

Straight forward DAW integration

If you have a visual bent and like to “see” your mix to make more precise Voice edits the Yamaha Motif XF DAW Editor allows you do easily edit your mix on a PC, and as the XF comes with fully functional bi-directional communication you can change parameters with the mouse or adjust knobs on the workstation and everything will be perfectly matched, allowing you to seamless go from one device to the other as the mood takes you. All of this is possible due to the seamless integration of the Motif XF with Steinberg’s Cubase 5, and if you want to use you workstation as a VST soft synth, you can with the VST3 editor, including AI.

And if you want to take full advantage of the integration capabilities of the workstation and record 16 tracks of audio to the DAW software, then there is an optional FireWire FW16E expansion board available.

Integrated Sampling Sequencer

Creating complete songs, including vocals, guitars and acoustic instruments, is easy and can be done all within the workstation thanks to the Integrated Sampling Sequencer. The sequencer allows you to do this by combining MIDI and audio samples (driven by MIDI events) and as the XF comes with 128MB RAM for sampling it is ready to go straight out of the box without needing to buy anything extra.

The unit even offers flexibility in the way you work by offering two sequencer modes:

A. First is a 16-track Pattern sequencer that allows you to build up sections of the song (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.) by working in loops and then chaining each section together to form the complete song.

B. Second is the 16-track Song sequencer, which acts in a linear tape machine style and lets you record then punch in and out as you would a tape machine with a DAW interface.

Not only does if offer these two modes you can quickly jump between the two depending on your needs and you can import finished Songs straight into Cubase along with all the samples for future editing and mastering using the bundled software.

Find Voices easily with Category Search

Finding just the right Voice to add to your mix is now easier than ever with Voices being categorized by instruments and featuring sub-categories, this superior sorting method also works with third party libraries. With the favorites feature you can tag Voices and Performances that you really like so you can get at them super fast. And with Performance Mode the Performances are sorted in musical genres so you can get at them on the fly.

What are SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates, and what do they mean to you?

These certificates are issued by a number of institutions, such as VeriSign, Equifax & GoDaddy, and they provide a secure connection between your computer and the computer that is running the checkout you are using. They verify the identity of the remote computer to you, so you know that the site you are using is who they say they are, and proves they are a trusted retailer and not someone trying to steal your credit card details. And it provides your identity to the remote computer, so they know you are not someone trying to hack into their checkout. Then as the data is being sent back and forth over the internet, the SSL certificate encrypts the data, so that no one can “listen in” to the data packets and pinch your credit card details.

All in all it provides you with the necessary peace of mind to purchase online, by ensuring everything is as it appears to be.
